Citrix offers a plethora of server and desktop virtualisation programs that exist to enhance the customer experience but do they really work for you and your business?

Cloud.com is a start-up that helps companies manage data traffic on their servers. Instead of assigning computing tasks to specific machines, Cloud.com’s software, CloudStack, can split the work among pools of computers, pulling them in when needed and freeing them up for other jobs when done. CloudStack also makes it easier for companies to quickly roll out new applications to users worldwide rather than forcing them to wait for a technician to do the work. The Cloud.com deal “is about technology, the team, and market momentum.”

There is some criticism for Citrix, with some analysts believing that it lacks behind rivals VMware when it comes to its virtualisation offering. Investors haven’t punished Citrix for its shortfall in virtualization however, mostly because the company gets so much revenue from its older programs and they have a lot of legacy businesses.

Analysts are betting on two trends that may allow Citrix to thrive:

It has a lead over VMware in an application that lets companies store copies of Windows on servers and push them out to PCs, which saves money by letting users run newer versions of the operating system on older machines.
“Cloud.com’s CloudStack can cost companies half to one-tenth as much as comparable cloud products from VMware and Microsoft”, says James Staten, an analyst at Forrester Research. “If you build your cloud on VMware or Microsoft,” he says, “you’re sharing your profits with them.”

ISEB Courses! What’s New?

There have been a number of developments to the ISEB (BCS Professional Certification) portfolio in the last 6 months, the most notable of which is the re-naming of the ISEB Business Analysis Diploma. As mentioned in the blog post from January 9th entitled ‘ISEB Business Analysis Diploma from TTS – everything you need in one package’, as of October 2011 the Diploma is now known as the BCS Diploma in Business Analysis. The structure of the Diploma remains the same but updates have been made to the syllabus for some modules.

This change has come about as the result of rigorous research in the IT industry with professionals, training providers, employers and experts. The updates mean the course range is now better aligned with the BCS skills and competency framework, SFIAplus, as well as the products and services offered with a BCS membership. The institute believes that by bringing the certification portfolio into sync with their other services they can “provide IT professionals with the additional professional development and career support they deserve.”

Why should you choose the ISEB certification route?

ISEB (Information Systems Examination Board) is the examination body associated with BCS, The Chartered Institute for I.T. By this merit an ISEB qualification is an industry recognised qualification, both in the UK and overseas.

The benefits of such recognition include showing a commitment to the field, to study and to the progress of your career through official channels. Is ISEB the same as ITIL?

In short, no. This is a common area of confusion!

ISEB is the exam board; ITIL is a set of accredited methodologies applied by such examining bodies for qualifications in IT Service Management.

ISEB = Information Systems Examination Board
ITIL = Information Technology Infrastructure Library

ISEB Business Analysis Diploma from TTS - everything you need in one package

From October 2011 the ISEB Business Analysis Diploma will be known as the BCS Diploma in Business Analysis. The structure of the Diploma remains the same but updates are being made to the syllabus for some modules.

BCA, The Chartered Institute for IT, states on their website that, “Business Analysis plays a pivotal role within an organisation, helping to identify business needs and determine solutions to business problems. The Diploma in Business Analysis is the international, industry-recognised certification that truly demonstrates the knowledge, skills and capabilities to be an effective Business Analyst.”

The Diploma is made up of 2 core modules that must be passed and then 1 from a selection of 4 knowledge-based topics and 1 from 4 practitioner elements. These written exams are then followed by an oral examination before the Diploma is certified.

These modules can be studied for and the exams sat individually or through a fast-track programme like the one offered by Total Training Solutions. There are no prerequisites for this 10 day residential package as it will equip delegates with little or no previous experience with the full range of knowledge and skills needed to take on the role of Business Analyst.

The course covers all aspects of business analysis from law, government and legal issues, professional bodies, financial and management accounting, analysing business activities, and indentifying solutions, through to implementing, managing and negotiating requirements.

How do you think technology is changing project management?

Project management used to start with an approved printed out Project Charter. Sent between parties via internal mail, key stakeholders would physically sign the document and return it to the project manager to update the version control for the document to version 1.0. The Project Charter would then be filed away for safe-keeping and the real work would begin.

Today, obtaining project approval is still needed, but the way you go about securing sponsor sign off is different. Due to technologies now available in the workplace most project sponsors would expect the entire approvals process to be done by email. Documents and email are stored electronically on a central shared server, along with scanned copies of any signed documents. This is now the accepted way of working, even in industries like financial services which typically take a while to catch up.

In the (recent) past the monthly report would be an adequate representation of a projects status. It was acknowledged that it was not a real-time project position, but it was accurate enough for the purposes of judging progress against milestones and budget. In general, people were happy with this level of detail, even though they knew it could no longer be true. Only in an emergency would any one ask to see anything more up to date.

Today, project stakeholders have different expectations about project information, because they can get other information at the click of a button. If you want to know the weather in Barcelona or the real-time stock prices on the FTSE you type it in to a search engine and bang! the answer is there in a flash! This lack of real-time data on projects status is no longer acceptable to stakeholders and project managers now have to deal with these raised expectations and always be on top of a project’s status.

VMware release ESXi - for free!

VMware ESXi revolutionised the virtualisation solutions market when it was first introduced. There are some drawbacks of the free version however, specifically when upgrading from ESXi 4 to ESXi 5, including the lack of access to the more robust vSphere Update Manager (which makes upgrading very easy). There have also been complaints about the meagre 8-GB vRAM allotment for the free version of ESXi. There are also some constraints as to the hardware the free version can run on. Optimizations to the PCoIP protocol benefit users in almost all usage scenarios.

Bandwidth Optimization
VMware View 5 offers major efficiency improvements in the WAN environment where bandwidth is highly shared. This is especially impressive as it does so whilst maintaining the user experience. In a typical office user, bandwidth consumption is reduced by up to 75%. This significant improvement means the VDI can support 4x more users to the same network. Even with new caching and lossless codec features, overall guest CPU usage is reduced.

Compute Optimization
Idle CPU usage is improved. Platform improvements with VMware vSphere 5
CPU scheduler
CPU and memory optimizations in vSphere 5 help achieve a higher consolidation ratio, particularly when using Windows 7 as this uses more memory than Windows XP.
VMware vSphere 5 has scheduler optimizations and works by making efficient use of the CPU. It does this by optimally scheduling the different desktops on the hyper-threaded core, meaning all thin (and zero) clients run in parallel whilst performing multiple tasks.

Memory footprint reduction
Memory on demand and swap mechanism lets more of the guest VRAM stay in the main memory. 60% footprint reduction = better consolidation rate.

Conservative ballooning
In earlier versions, the balloon driver activated when the systems free memory dropped below 6% of the total memory. On servers with a large amount of main memory, 6% is a lot and ballooning is not required. vSphere 5 keeps the 6% threshold for machines with less memory but also allows ballooning at as low as 1% for larger machine memories.

vSphere 5 also reduces the amount of virtual machine book-keeping data that needs to be kept in the main memory, making more memory available for desktop VRAM and improving VDI.

Thin clients and zero clients are virtual desktop infrastructures (VDI). A key driver for companies adopting this type of technology is the promise of radically lowering Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) while still delivering a complete Windows-based desktop computing environment. Your choice of endpoint will greatly influence this success. Here we will discuss the key points of thin client and zero client options.

The term thin client refers to a computer or program which heavily depends on some other computer, or more specifically its server, to fulfil its traditional computational role. Thin clients occur as components of a broader computer infrastructure, where many clients share their workings with the same server.

A common modern thin client is a low-end computer terminal which concentrates solely on providing a graphical user interface to the end user. The remaining functionality, in particular the operating system (OS), is provided by the server. Thin clients can be designed with much more modest hardware, because they perform much more modest operations, thus saving businesses and organisations money on their I.T. spend. Other benefits include the security risk factor which thin clients go towards combating. A thin client relies on its server to process most or all of its business logic thus removing security risks in individual hosts. Other facts to consider with this type of technology include the impact on productivity and energy use from endpoints.

Zero client technology is also a server-based computer model but the end user's computing device has no local storage, no operating system, central processing unit (CPU) or memory located at the endpoint. Zero clients all have software and all run an OS. For this reason a zero client can be contrasted with a thin client, which retains the operating system and each device's specific configuration settings in flash memory.

A zero client device is a small box that only connects a monitor and its accessories (keyboard, mouse etc) back to a remote server. The server, which hosts the client's OS and software applications, can be accessed wirelessly or with cable. Zero clients are often used in a VDI environment.

This is what separates zero clients from thin clients (which require local processing capabilities and operating systems). In fact, some say that zero clients, thin clients and VDI are different technologies that can intertwine to create a desktop experience for the end user.

VDI is the key technology behind zero clients. Ideally a zero client endpoint will connect back to a virtual PC located on a blade server in the data centre.

In summary:
• A Zero Client is more likely to be a purpose built hardware, designed specifically to connect you to your virtual desktop.
• A Thin Client is a more generic device which could be used and programmed to run different functions/software other than just connecting to a virtual desktop.

How are the PRINCE2 examinations structured?

Any organisation offering PRINCE2 training courses must be accredited by the Association for Project Management (APM) Group. The APM set out strict examination guidelines that training providers must adhere to.

The structure of PRINCE2 examinations are two-fold. A candidate can choose to sit a course, like the ones offered by Total Training Solutions, and examination or they can teach themselves the course content and then sit the exam via an Open Centre. Your learning style will dictate your studying preference but the advantages of studying with an Accredited Training Organisation include supported learning and the guidance of a qualified teacher.

The PRINCE2 courses offered by Total Training Solutions include separate Foundation and Practitioner options, a five day combined course and even a Virtual Classroom PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner course amongst others. The advantage of the Virtual course allows the participant to study in their own environment and is spread out over five to six weeks, ending in the Practitioner exam. The course combines the best of trainer led workshops and independent learning as the webinars can be taken around other commitments and has the advantage of allowing time between modules for content to be digested before the next week.

The PRINCE2 Foundation examination is made up of 75 multiple choice questions. Five questions are trials and the exam mark is out of 70. A 50% score is needed to pass the course meaning 35 points are required. The Practitioner course consists of 9 questions, each worth 12 marks. Of the 108 marks available, 59 (55%) are needed to pass the exam. The exam is 2.5 hours long and it is an open book exam.

The Foundation course MUST be passed before a candidate can sit the Practitioner course. It is possible that both exams can be sat on the same day or, more commonly, on separate dates. If taking the TTS five day combined course, the Foundation exam is sat in the afternoon on the third day. There is then the option to sit the Practitioner exam on the final day or at a later date. If picking a later date, the delegate also has the choice to differ the final two days of the course too.

An advantage of taking a combined PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner course mean both exams can be sat in the same week. If this is the case, a Practitioner Certificate will be received, but not a Foundation Certificate. As you cannot sit the Practitioner exam without first having passed the Foundation, it is not necessary to send a separate Foundation Certificate.

The PRINCE2 Qualification Scheme is based on Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 - 2009 Edition.

Scrum is an iterative, incremental approach to project management and a part of the Agile methodology system. The Scrum theory was originally designed for managing product development projects, however it is now commonly used on the management of software development projects. It can also be used to run software maintenance teams or as a general project/program management approach, both IT and non-technical.

A Scrum project needs a ‘Scrum Master’ or project manager who oversees the whole process, a ‘Product Owner’ who works on behalf of the client and sets the tasks and objectives and a ‘Team’, made up of individuals and organisations who carry out the work to complete the project.

This Scrum framework runs on a cycle basis. It begins with initial planning stages where objectives and actions are agreed by all those involved with the project and put in the ‘backlog’ and ends with the deployment of the project. In between there are repeated cycles or ‘sprints’ (iterative) made up of the agreed actions from the backlog. There are an infinite number of sprints in the cycle and will continue until the backlog is empty and the project completed.

The Scrum cycle system allows businesses to take in and assess the development of the project on a step-by-step basis (incremental). By learning from earlier parts of the process the team can modify their approach before deciding on and undertaking the next phase. The Scrum structure allows for changes by the client at any stage of the project. Although sprint actions are frozen in the planning meetings, there is regular opportunity for objectives and actions to be altered at the end of a cycle without affecting the running of the overall project.

Adobe release Creative Suite 5.5

Adobe recently released Creative Suite 5.5, the first of mid-cycle releases designed to keep users up to date and ahead of the technology curve between milestone CS product releases, which will now occur every 24 months. It offers a variety of brand new components and improvements upon existing CS components, and users of CS2 and later versions are eligible to upgrade.

Features which have been improved since CS5 include a multi-screen preview function in Dreamweaver, enhanced e-book publishing facilities, and the addition of Action Wizard to Acrobat Pro which enables the user to create automated sequences of frequently-used multi-step actions. There have also been essential developments in HTML5 and video.

Adobe is pushing the improvements in mobile authoring technology. They say that the upgrade will enable developers to ‘efficiently create and deliver content and applications for any [Android, Blackberry and iOS] screen or device’. This is a major selling point given the huge rise in sales of smart phones and the now-mainstream status of such products. Flash Professional will allow users to create interactive content that is consistent across the desktop, browser and hand-held devices to reach the widest possible audience. CS5.5 also now offers tablet support, with a number of iPad Adobe applications launched as part of the package.

Oracle is a data management solution. To truly understand Oracle you must first ask yourself, “What is a database?”

A relational database stores the data in the form of tables and columns. Some databases have minimal feature sets and only store data, while others include programming languages, facilities and utilities to support enterprise-level applications like ERP and data warehousing. Oracle targets high-end workstations and minicomputers as the server platforms on which to run its database systems. Oracle has long been a champion of network computers. It was the world's first software company to develop and deploy 100 percent Internet-enabled enterprise software across its entire product line: database, server, enterprise business applications, and application development and decision support tools.

How it works

The Oracle program runs in the background, maintaining your data for you and figuring out where it should go on your hard drive. It is made up of a set of processes running in your operating system. These processes manage how data is stored and how it is accessed. The program is so sophisticated it runs in the background maintaining data and identifying where it goes on your hard drive.

Most relational databases, Oracle included, use Structured Query Language (SQL) to access data. SQL allows you to SELECT your data, INSERT new records, UPDATE existing records and DELETE records you want to get rid of. SQL can be embedded in other languages or you can run scripts of SQL directly against the database.

PL/SQL is the procedural language extension to SQL. PL/SQL is a programming language like C, Java or Pascal.

SQL*Plus - can access the database, write stored procedures and run SQL commands to retrieve data and run scripts.

HTML DB - is a fairly new application builder geared toward web development. This tool runs from the database and can be presented to the web using the Apache web server that comes with the database.

Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) - is the Enterprise GUI tool to manage the database. From this tool you can perform any action in the database that is required. This tool is primarily used for administration but can also be provided to developers for application performance tuning and monitoring.

The quality and performance of the trainer themselves makes a key difference. It has been shown that people react better to a trainer who is trained in the specific industry and can offer advice and support from their real life experiences to demonstrate to the participants.
Training should follow a structured training programme designed to help participants retain the information. Each class should relate to the last and to the next and should build on the values and skills previously learnt. It may also be handy to schedule the training sessions in blocks throughout the week, thus giving the participants a chance to employ their training throughout the week and analyse its outcome.
Managers could attend training sessions to reinforce their own skills and learn some new ones. Other employees may find it useful to see their managers using new skills and build their own confidence to implement them.
Although there is a huge array of skills and information to train people in, it is important to employ only the ones that are relevant and will be used consistently in a specific job. It is more effective for participants to be able to use their new knowledge within their field immediately.
Give pre-workshop articles or questionnaires. A pre-training exercise can bring a group together on one particular topic and sees some people understanding and retaining the training more prominently.
Keep the training varied, fun and stimulating from session to session. Use real life analogies, visual aids such as power points or whiteboards and encourage active participation which essentially encourages people to transfer their training back to their job.

ITIL v3 Credit System explained

A credit system has been introduced to support the ITIL V3 qualifications. From the V3 qualification to the earlier V1 & V2 schemes, the credit system shows recognition of investment the candidate has put in to the ITIL scheme.

The credit scores work by assigning a score to each of the ITIL qualifications upon completion of each module. From the foundation through to the expert scheme a credit score is added together and totalled up in an individual credit profile.

Individuals need to achieve a certain number of credit scores in order to pursue certain ITIL qualifications. The expert qualification in particular requires a minimum of 22 credits from previous modules.

ITIL V3 Credit scores

From building up a credit score candidates can achieve a higher level of qualification and eventually master using ITIL in the workplace. The modules are designed to give a clear insight into using ITIL in the workplace and significantly improving their career prospects.

ITIL v3 Qualification Scheme explained

Many countries around the world are using Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) to help manage their IT communications. Its popularity is growing due to the fact that ITIL is helping companies develop a great foundation to systematically improve the delivery of IT consistently.

Gaining an ITIL qualification can be extremely useful if you are looking to work with ITIL on a daily basis. ITIL V3 Qualifications are available at four levels (see diagram below) with each certificate carrying a number of credits towards the advanced level qualifications.

Types of qualifications

The four types of qualifications are:

ITIL V3 Foundation qualification which is a two credit course aimed at individuals or professionals who require a basic understanding of how the ITIL framework is used within the organisation.
ITIL V3 Intermediate qualification offers two routes to choose from depending on the type of profession or career students are looking to pursue
The ‘Lifecycle’ option contains five modules which are each worth three credits and includes:
- Service design
- Service transition
- Service operation
- Continual Service Improvement
- Service strategy
The ‘Capability’ option has four modules which are worth four credits each:
- Planning, protection and optimisation
- Service offerings
- Release, control & validation
- Operational support & analysis
The course is then tied together with the ‘Managing Across the Lifecycle’ module which is a free-standing qualification, but is also the final module of the Service Lifecycle and/or Service Capability modules that leads to the ITIL Expert in IT Service Management.
ITIL Expert qualification is achieved by accumulating credits through the first two schemes. To gain expert qualification in ITIL you have to achieve a minimum of 22 credits from the previous ITIL qualifications; two of which must be from the Foundation module and five must be from the Managing Across the Lifecycle module which is the final step.
ITIL Master level is the highest qualification for ITIL and leads on to an ITSM professional certificate. The qualification is designed for individuals who can demonstrate defined ITIL practices within the organisation.

Linux vs. Microsoft

Much is said about the Linux operating system but how does it really size up to Microsoft?

Firstly, Linux is an entirely free operating system; it does not cost anything to the user. Surely you must think because it’s free they must charge for the software. Again, all the software is free to use and download. Compatible software such as spreadsheets, word-processing and email applications are freely available to work from. This is in contrast to Microsoft whose Microsoft Office packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Access as well as the actual operating systems are some of the priciest, bestselling products on the market.

Linux is available on many types of CPUs and most recently on a variety of other devices such as mobile phones and PDAs. Because of the diversity of the CPU component, Linux can adapt its operating system to fit around most modern day technological products. In order to progress through the full V3 qualification programme, candidates must complete this course first and our eLearning packages allow them to do this at their own speed and from their own location.

The foundation course is aimed at those people who are looking for a basic understanding of the ITL framework; those who need to understand how ITIL can help improve overall IT service management within an organisation and those who are already working within an ITIL environment and wish to better understand the practices and processes involved.

What topics are covered?
