A Career In Health And Safety Can Be Extremely Rewarding

A Career In Health And Safety Can Be Extremely Rewarding

Health and safety in the workplace is a serious issue, since the number of accidents that occur while working runs into hundreds of thousands every year. Some may only involve minor injury, such as a bruise, but others result in serious injury, and there are, on occasion, fatalities. In the year 2019/2020 there were 111 fatal accidents in the workplace. There were also over 65,000 injuries that resulted in more than seven days off work reported under the regulations, but the HSE states that it is known that the figures are under-reported, with many employers failing to report when they should. In fact, the HSE states that the likely figure of serious accidents is twice the reported figure.

The foregoing are the reasons why we now have laws to which employers must adhere regarding health and safety. The two main requirements are the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (MHSWR) 1999. These require employers to carry out a risk assessment of their premises and the work undertaken, and to take steps to ensure that health and safety risks are either removed or minimised. The law does accept that some risks cannot be eradicated. For example, a manufacturer may need to work with materials that are inherently dangerous, such as flammable substances.

However, assessing risks in the workplace can be exceptionally difficult for those who do not understand what the risks may be in the first place, which is why, today, health and safety management has become a career in its’ own right, and in turn why there are courses to train those who wish to embark on such a career that can lead to a Masters Degree. It follows that health and safety management can be a rewarding career both in terms of success achieved and the salaries available.

Many of these courses are run by trainers such as ourselves at Total Training Solutions. Our courses come under the heading of NEBOSH training, NEBOSH being the abbreviation of the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health. Our NEBOSH training in Newcastle covers all the wide range of NEBOSH courses which are available for a number of different needs and requirements. The courses offer globally recognised qualifications such as the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, which are excellent first steps towards becoming a fully qualified health and safety professional.

The NEBOSH General Certificate is an excellent starting point for those who wish to progress in the health and safety field and is the equivalent of an A level. Neither course assumes any previous health and safety knowledge but they form a basis for onward progression to a NEBOSH National Diploma which is a level 6 qualification and is the equivalent of a full honours degree. Many job adverts for health and safety specialists specify that the General Certificate is a job requirement, so holders will have better job prospects.

At Total Training Solutions we also offer a course for the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety which is aimed specifically at the construction industry which is fraught with dangers. This Certificate meets the academic requirements of the Technical membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (Tech IOSH) and Associate membership of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (AIIRSM).

Then we have the NEBOSH National Certificate in Fire Safety and Risk Management. All employers are required by law to undertake a fire risk assessment of their premises and if they have more than four employees keep a written record of it. However, most employers have no real idea what they should be looking for with regard to fire risks. The law does allow employers to have someone else undertake their fire risk assessment for them, and there are now companies who do nothing other than carry out fire risk assessments for those without the necessary skills, in order to keep them compliant with the law. This can be another very rewarding career for those who have the necessary training and skills and is another of our courses that you can take in Newcastle.
