Transferable skills for students

31 July 2014

Over the last three weeks, we have discussed the benefits of taking a summer course for IT, business and creative arts students. However, these are not the only students who can benefit from an additional qualification. The job market is tough for all graduates, so students of all disciplines can benefit from using their summer productively by investing in a professional qualification.

Regardless of what subject you may be studying at university, there are a number of professional qualifications which can help you find employment once you graduate. For example, an IT related course. Whether you’re studying maths, sociology or drama, the chances are at some point in your professional career, you will find yourself using a computer. Most jobs now use some element of IT, and so a qualification which reassures employers that you have the necessary skills can be a great investment. Taking a course in either Windows or Apple OS X can ensure that you are able to use the two most popular operating systems proficiently. We recommend choosing the system with which you are least familiar, so that you are covered regardless of what system is used by your future employer. You may also consider taking a course in Oracle, as their systems are used by multiple industries including the public sector, utilities, health services and financial services. This will save potential employers the cost of extensive training and give you an edge over other applicants.

Alternatively, you may wish to invest in a course which will help you make connections and forge relationships. All employers, regardless of industry, seek to hire personable and professional employees, with whom it is easy to communicate. This is where taking a course in communication or business relationships could help. A qualification like this can help you improve your interpersonal skills and show potential employers that you have more than just technical ability. Whether you’re hoping to become a nurse, a marketing professional or an accountant, a qualification in effective communication is sure to give you an edge when looking for work. If your chosen career is less social, you may decide to take a personal effectiveness course. This includes (but is not limited to) building confidence, creative thinking, time management and problem solving. These transferable skills can be used in all professions, making the course more cost-effective, and ensuring you will be able to impress employers for years to come, regardless of industry.

A student’s summer can span a number of months, and with such a competitive job market, it is now more crucial than ever to use your time productively. Gaining experience or additional qualifications can give you a helping hand when you graduate and begin looking for jobs - and by choosing a transferable skill you will never be tied down to a particular industry or sector.
